Field Exercises.... ARTEPs Autumn Forges RDF Deployments Other field training |
One of the aspects of being a tanker is field training. Stateside (the :"world" as we called it) training was conducted on military posts and specialized sites. But in places like Germany, the training was often performed right on the German countryside. Needless to say, maneuvering 56 ton tanks on German roads usually did not endear us to the locals! The following is a photo collection with narrative of various exercises in Germany and the United States, involving the 3rd Armored Division and the 194th Armored Brigade. |
Hohenfels ARTEPs, Mar 1978, Mar 1979 |

Constant Enforcer, Sept. 1979 |
Camp Grayling, Spring 1980 and 81 |
Camp Aterbury, Spring 1981 |

Exercises with the 3rd Armored Division "Spearhead" helping to guard the Fulda Gap, along with the 8th Infantry Division (Mech) and the 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment, all part of the U.S. V Corps. Sister units in the area included the German 5th Panzer Division, Belgian 16th Mech Division, the Canadian Lahr Brigade, and various British units on constant rotation. |
Exercises with the 194th Armored Brigade, part of the Rapid Deployment Force. The 194th had a unique dual-assignment: provide training support to the Armor School and deploy with elements of the RDF, especially to the mid-east during the Iran hostage crisis. |
Anatomy of a tank battle. From planning to consolidation, this area reviews a modern mechanized battle from beginning to end, including maps, situation briefing and execution. |
